Passenger CarryingThe BGA policy is that all clubs and pilots must understand the level of risk appropriate to each type of flying. The acceptable level of risk for flying by inexperienced pilots and flight involving members of the public must be significantly lower than that appropriate to solo flight by qualified and current glider pilots engaged in sport gliding. Passenger carrying flights may involve members of the public who expect flying to be very safe. They may not understand the inherent risks associated with the sport of gliding. In addition to the requirement to brief a passenger that flying in gliders is not as safe as flying in commercial air transport, the following guidelines apply. "There are no upper or lower age limits on learning to fly but you must be 16 years of age before you can fly solo. If you are heavier than 16st 4lb (228lb, 103 kg), you may not be able to fly in our gliders as most gliders have a weight limit of 242 lb (110 kg) for each seat. The pilots weight must include the weight of a parachute (15 lb or 7 kg). People over 6ft 4in (193cm) may not be able to fly in our gliders. The lower weight limit is approximately 44kg (7 stone or 98 pounds). The minimum height for pupils is approximately five feet (152 cm). Please contact the office if you are unsure."
